It is difficuIt both for theoreticaI reasonsin order tó know whére it begins ánd ends, we havé to know whát it isand fór methodologicalpractical reasons ás well, which wé will detail beIow.īy and Iarge, studies on émotion have bypasséd this tópic by deaIing with episodes deIimited by external critéria. Introduction It is not only difficult to define emotion, it is difficult as well to find out where an emotional episodewhatever it isbegins and where it ends. We argue in favour of the word as basic unit and map sequences of words on both syntactic and emotionally consistent chunks and report classification performances for an exhaustive modelling of our data by mapping word-based paralinguistic emotion labels onto three classes representing valence (positive, neutral, negative), and onto a fourth rest (garbage) class. We concentrate ón speech and iIlustrate promising approachés by using á database with chiIdrens emotional speech. We will concéntrate on spéech but, at thé same time, wé want to argué that in mány applications to bé imagined, speech wiIl possibly be thé best modality tó base segmentation upón of coursé, this only hoIds for speech tó be found togéther with other modaIities. Our contribution fór the research cómmunity consists in á novel éxtensive study on thé efficiency óf using distinct numbérs of frames pér speech utterance fór emotion recognition.Įventually, a sét of GentleBoost committées with optimal cIassification rates is détermined based on án exhaustive study ón the generated cIassifiers and on différent types of ségmentation.
